STATEWIDE ENERGY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM (SEMP) TRAINING

De Anza College's Environmental Studies Department has been a part of a statewide consortium to promote energy savings through training and policy within the California Community College (CCC) system during the last 10 years. This consortium included the Chancellor's Office of the California Community Colleges, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), businesses and other organizations.

The Statewide Energy Management Program (SEMP) efforts produced two excellent handbooks on energy training and energy policy for the CCC districts (and State of California). These critical handbooks can help every citizen, college, state agency, business, the state and nation move in a more sustainable direction! SEMP is part of the California Education Code.

We are convinced that the CCC system can become a model for the entire country, with the potential to help educate our students, the public and leadership in every region of California about energy efficiency, resource conservation and stewardship.

SEMP TRAINING AT THE KIRSCH CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

The Kirsch Center for Environmental Studies is a statewide training center and contains the first Statewide Energy Management Program (SEMP) lab and classroom. The building is a favorite location for policy makers, school officials, student groups, Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and foreign visitors to visit and use for conferences on energy and environmental issues.

Kirsch Center for Environmental Studies at De Anza College

The Kirsch Center was designed to teach about sustainable building principles. Three locations within the building are designated as key SEMP training areas.

  • The SEMP Lab (KC 239) provides learning space for classes leading to certificates and degrees in energy management.
  • The Energy Exhibit Hall (downstairs entry) is a high tech demonstration area for energy equipment and systems, including a real-time energy monitor display for the building's photovoltaic (PV) system.
  • The Distance Education SEMP classroom (KC 113) opens in Spring 2008. It will include broadcast capability for SEMP courses.

To learn more about the building that "teaches about energy, resources and stewardship," visit the Kirsch Center Web site.

We would be honored to work with you, sharing what we have learned about energy policy, energy training, green building, team-building and stewardship! Please contact us for more information or to schedule a tour.
