DE ANZA TO PARTICIPATE IN "FOCUS THE NATION" TEACH-IN ON CLIMATE CHANGE
Environmental Sustainability a Longtime Focus of the College

CUPERTINO--De Anza College will join more than 1,450 colleges and universities in Focus the Nation, the largest teach-in in United States history, on Thursday, Jan. 31. The event will provide education on the science and politics of global warming, as well as on concrete steps everyone can take to effect change. De Anza's Focus the Nation teach-in will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Campus Center Conference Room A.

Events of the day will include workshops, performances and interactive panels, including a 12:30 p.m. policymakers' panel featuring De Anza President Brian Murphy with Cupertino Mayor Dolly Sandoval, among other invitees including student leaders. U.S. Rep. Mike Honda is also scheduled to have a presence on the panel.

"Climate change is truly one of the most pressing topics of our time," said Murphy. "Given this fact, and De Anza's demonstrated commitments to environmental sustainability and civic engagement, we are proud to participate in Focus the Nation and provide students the opportunity to engage in a topic critical globally and locally, and contribute to making positive change."

De Anza College's Institute of Community and Civic Engagement (ICCE) works to educate students about becoming aware, engaged citizens committed to serving and transforming the community. Read more about ICCE at www.deanza.edu/communityengagement.

The college's Kirsch Center for Environmental Studies recently was honored with a first-place finish in the Center for the Built Environment's inaugural "Livable Buildings Awards." Among the college's comprehensive sustainability efforts is the creation of one of the first Sustainability Management Plans in higher education; the LEED® certification of the Science Center and the Student and Community Services Building; the Kirsch Center's LEED® platinum application and at least LEED® silver certification of the future Visual and Performing Arts and Mediated Learning centers. College Food Services, located in the renovated and environmentally friendly Campus Center, features organic produce options from local sources and biodegradable paper products and utensils. In addition, landscaping projects at De Anza feature native and drought-tolerant plants; no pesticides are used.
