Simon, a De Anza student  

Maura

Maura, a native of Brazil, was working on her master's degree in education when she decided she needed to learn to speak English. When she came to the United States, she knew only six English words. After a year of financial help from her mother, Maura is paying for college on her own. She works 8 1/2 hours a day at two jobs and spends the rest of the time studying and resting.

  

Educational Goal: ESL and child development, then return home to complete my master's degree in education.

Career Goal: Interested in child development and creating teaching methods.

Free time: Surf the 'Net, read books and watch movies.

Why De Anza?: De Anza offers good career planning and I like the quarter system.

The best thing about De Anza: The environment, the teaching staff and the classes offered.

Biggest fear before starting college: Speaking English and not passing my classes.

One item that is essential for college: Responsibility.

De Anza in three words: Enjoyable, real, accessible.

Favorite book: Sophie's World: A Novel About the History of Philosophy, by Jostein Gaarder

What CD is in your player right now?: ABBA

Favorite movie: Titanic

What motivates you?: My mother.

Advice for new students: Take your classes seriously and be determined to succeed.
