The California History Center Building - Le Petit Trianon
The California History Center is located in a building called le Petit Trianon. In 1895, wealthy San Francisco bachelor Charles Baldwin commissioned architect Willis Polk to design a country estate in the style of buildings at Versaille near Paris, France. This home and surrounding vineyards became a retreat for Baldwin and his wife, Virginia, from busy life in San Francisco. The building and property changed hands a few times and was eventually sold to the Foothill College District in 1959. It was registered as a national landmark in 1972 and restoration was completed in 1982. The building was moved from its original site - where the Flint Center for Performing Arts was, at the north side of the sunken gardens - to its current location at the west side of the sunken gardens.
