MOMENTUM Speakers Series
The Momentum series serves as an ongoing dialogue platform and the dean's vehicle for fostering deep mindfulness and productive conversations.
Its primary aim is to close the equity gap, champion inclusivity, advance social justice reform, and deliberately confront structural racism within our educational institutions, both in the classroom and throughout the broader community. Its overarching goal is to bolster optimism, emotional regulation, empathy, diverse perspectives, pro-social objectives, and mindful awareness among all participants.
This space is dedicated to discussing and mobilizing strategies to more effectively support our college’s efforts in achieving equitable policing and eradicating racism definitively
Upcoming Events
Race, Class and Gender in Mid-1800s California
Guest Speakers: Ruben Abrica, emeritus instructor, Spanish Language and Culture, and David Howard-Pitney, emeritus instructor, History
- Wednesday, Dec. 4
- 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
- California History Center
Ruben Abrica and David Howard-Pitney will share observations about the roles of race, especially regarding Indigenous persons, and gender in determining social-political standing in Mexican versus Anglo-governed California.
Many differences related to the more varied and fluid notions of race and class found in Mexican Californio society versus more binary absolutist notions of race held by Anglo-Americans.
Ruben will illustrate these issues through the life of Dońa Juana Briones, an Indigenous woman who achieved high status in Alta California.
David will focus on debates and decisions of delegates to California’s 1849 Constitutional Convention concerning the rights of Indigenous people in early American California.
