There's Still Time To Vote

Vote By Tomorrow, Nov. 5

f you’re eligible to vote and haven’t already done so, there’s still time to have your say in this year’s important election for U.S. president, Congress, state and local offices, and ballot measures.

If you aren't registered to vote, you can register and cast a conditional ballot by going in person to a county Vote Center or the Registrar of Voters office no later than tomorrow – Tuesday, Nov. 5. (You must be 18 or older and a U.S. citizen.)

ballot drop boxRegistered voters should have received a ballot in the mail, which you can fill out and return no later than tomorrow by mailing it back, placing it in an official Ballot Drop Box or taking it in person to a county Vote Center.

  • You can mail your ballot – postage is free – but it must be postmarked by tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov. 5).
  • If you live in Santa Clara County, you can county elections website to find a Drop Box near you. There's one on campus, outside the RSS Building near the entrance facing Staff/Student Lot A. 
  • You can also look online to find a Vote Center near you. 

If you registered but didn't receive your ballot, you can get assistance at any county Vote Center or the Registrar of Voters office.

Upcoming Events

De Anza Homecoming Is This Friday

students with 2023 balloonsThis Friday, Nov. 8, is the De Anza Homecoming dance! The event will be from 5:30-9 p.m. in Conference Rooms A&B of the Campus Center, and semi-formal attire will be required. There will be food, games, a photo booth and henna art. Admission is free for students with a DASG card. Please RSVP in advance and contact collegelife@deanza.edu with any questions.

There is also a homecoming football game against College of the Siskiyous next Saturday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. There will be a pre-game event before kickoff – details will be released soon.

Veterans Day Event

Join the Veterans Resource Center (VRC), the Rotary Club of Cupertino, the American Legion and more to celebrate Veterans Day at a special event this Thursday, Nov. 7, beginning at 9 a.m. in the Seminar Building (SEM 3). There will be a mobile veteran center, resources from community partners and remarks from employees. Lunch will be served.

Handshake 101 Workshops

Learn how to use the Handshake career website by attending one of the upcoming workshops sponsored by De Anza’s Career Technical Education division and Handshake on Tuesday, Nov. 12, and Tuesday, Nov. 19. Students will learn how to navigate the website, find internships and jobs and explore career interests. The event is free and will take place in the Business and Finance Village Center AT-202. Please RSVP in advance for the Nov. 12 and Nov. 19 events. Students should also bring a laptop as this is an interactive event.

Career Training Open House Is Next Wednesday

The Career Training Open House is next Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Main Quad. Students can learn more about the different career training programs at De Anza, which cover 25 fields – including computer science, film and television production, automotive technology, design manufacturing, healthcare, law and more. Faculty and staff members will be available to answer questions and will also host demonstrations and lead tours. See a full list of activities at deanza.edu/career-training/open-house.


DASG Midterm Election

Legislative Affairs Liaison Application Due This Friday

De Anza Student Government (DASG) is holding a midterm election for the 2024-2025 Legislative Affairs Liaison position. In order to run, students must submit an application by this Friday, Nov. 8, at 4 p.m. Please read the DASG Administration Code and Elections Code for more information on the position.


Honors and Achievements

Nursing Program Receives Largest Grant To Date

The Nursing program has received a $132,000 Nursing Enrollment and Retention Grant, which is the largest grant the program has received so far. The state chancellor’s office Workforce and Economic Development Division increased the original grant amount after re-assessing the program. Special thanks to Rana Marinas, interim Nursing director, and Sirisha Pingali and Mario Murillo in the grant office.

Three Student Teams Win at StartUpPalooza

Eight teams of De Anza students competed for cash prizes as they pitched ideas for innovative and socially responsible new businesses at “StartUpPalooza” last Tuesday, Oct. 29. The teams took turns presenting ideas for new ventures in health care, financial services, sustainability and public safety. In total, 11 students competed and 60 students and employees were in the audience.

The first place prize of $500 was awarded to Hugh Nguyen and Luca Paliska for ShortType, an AI-driven typing autocompletion tool for specific subject areas that enables people with motor disabilities to type faster. Ryan Nguyen and Donavan Yip won the second place prize of $150 for Drunk No Drive, a smart steering wheel that uses multiple sensors to detect intoxication and prevent drunk driving. Aidai Boobekova won the third place prize of $100 for InSCOUT, an autonomous drone that determines the locations of victims, detects toxic gasses and creates real-time 3D mapping of structures for first responders.

The event was the culmination of a monthlong “Startup Boot Camp" in which students learned about business models, funding, team building and pitching business proposals. The boot camp was organized by the Business Department’s Innovation Center and instructor Rowland Chen, with sponsors including the Business, Computer Science and Applied Technologies Division, Jared Finegold and the Silicon Valley Laboratory.
