Quick Notes for the Week of March 10


VTA Bus and Light Rail Unavailable

Plan for Alternative Transportation

VTA logoValley Transit Authority (VTA) bus and light rail service is not available today (Monday, March 10) as workers are on strike. It is unknown when the strike will end and when service will resume. However, VTA Access service for riders with disabilities is continuing as normal.

Please check the VTA webpage or social media for the latest information and plan for alternate transportation to campus, such as carpooling or rideshare services.


Spring Open House

Spring Open HousePlease tell your friends: Our Spring Open House is Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The open house is an opportunity for prospective students, family members and community residents to learn about all the amazing programs and facilities that make De Anza the college that's always Tops in Transfer – and Tops in Career Training, too.

Graduating high school seniors can also learn about De Anza's six Villages – supportive communities where students can find new friends and resources that are relevant to their major or area of interest.

Make sure to check the website – we’ll be posting a detailed schedule of activities and a sign-up form so you can let us know you're coming and reserve your place for a campus tour or Planetarium show. There will be food trucks, too!

Deaf Awareness Event Is This Thursday, March 13

two students speaking in American Sign LanguageLearn about deafness and deaf culture this Thursday, March 13, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in Conference Rooms A&B in the Campus Center. There will be interactive booths and active learning opportunities. You can learn about American Sign Language, captioning services and language equity and access. Refreshments will be provided.

This event is co-sponsored by Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS) and the Office of Professional Development.

Special St. Patrick’s Day Menu This Thursday, March 13

The Campus Center will be serving a special menu this Thursday, March 13, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. for St. Patrick’s Day. Dishes include colcannon – smashed Yukon Gold potatoes, scallion onions, kale and lashings of Kerrygold butter, available for $6.50 – and corned beef and cabbage, served with colcannon, carrots and parsley sauce, available for $12.50. The food court is open Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m.-5 p.m.

Innovation, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Rowland ChenThe De Anza Innovation Center will host a talk by Rowland Chen, business instructor and CEO of The Silicon Valley Laboratory, this Friday, March 14, from 9-10 a.m. on Zoom. Chen, who has worked with a variety of innovative start-up companies, will talk about innovation and the effects of diversity, equity and inclusion.

This is the first in a series of talks hosted by the center this winter and spring. For more information and the Zoom link for the talk, visit deanza.edu/buscs/innovation.

Winter Concert Is This Saturday, March 15

student orchestra playingThe Music Department is hosting a winter concert next Saturday, March 15, at 7 p.m. in the VPAC.

The Concert Band, Vintage Singers, Jazz Ensemble and De Anza Chorale will be performing. Student admission is $5 and general admission is $10.


Contribute to LGBTQ+ History Project

Stories and Artwork Due This Friday, March 14

The Pride Center is collecting and archiving stories and artwork from the LGBTQ+ community for the “What’s It Like to be Queer in 2025?” project.

You can submit artwork based on this theme or stories in written, audio or visual formats. If you’d like to participate, be sure to complete the online form no later than this Friday, March 14. You can choose to add your real name or remain anonymous.

The project will be exhibited in the California History Center during the Taste of History event on Saturday, April 26, and in the Pride Center during the Queer and Now Conference on Thursday, May 8.


Next Week

DSPS Open House

Please tell your friends and family: Disability Support Programs and Services (DSPS) is holding an open house for high school seniors and their parents or guardians next Monday, March 17, from 5:30-7 p.m. in Conference Rooms A&B. Attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • Meet with DSPS staff
  • Learn more about DSPS and accommodations
  • Complete the college application and DSPS application
  • Meet with counselors and set up accommodations on a first-come, first-served basis

Light refreshments will be served. Attendees can park for free and must RSVP in advance. If you have questions, please contact Denisse Dolmo at dolmodenisse@deanza.edu


Student Spotlight

Iris Li in 3C2A Article

Iris LiStudent Iris Li was featured in a recent article about student leadership on the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) website.

As a sophomore soccer team captain, Li is often asked to play different positions on the team, including attacking midfielder, defensive middle, center back and emergency goalkeeper. She was an All-Coast Conference selection in both 2023 and 2024 fall seasons and earned Academic All-Conference honors for her perfect 4.0 GPA. She has also served on the college’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) for several years, including this year as Academics Commissioner.

Li is also the De Anza student trustee on the Foothill-De Anza Community College District Board of Trustees. In that role, she has traveled with the board to Washington, D.C. to advocate for the Dream Act and meet members of Congress. Li took on this role after serving on the De Anza Student Government during her freshman year.

Awards for Journalism Students

students kneeling with award certificatesStudents in the De Anza Journalism program took home 40 awards after attending the Spring National College Media Conference, held last week in Long Beach. The honors included General Excellence awards for La Voz News in both print and online categories; a Pacesetter award for print media; and first place awards for general innovation, best sports photograph and best illustration. The conference included competitions organized by the Associated Collegiate Press, the California College Media Association and the Journalism Association of Community Colleges. Vocal Classes Perform at Grace Cathedral Saturday, March 29

Grace CathedralDe Anza’s Chorale and Vintage Singers ensemble classes have been invited to perform at Grace Cathedral, thanks to instructor Cyril Deaconoff, who holds a doctoral degree in music, and vocal music student Manuel Martinez.

The ensembles will perform “Fauré Requiem,” in collaboration with the Chamber Orchestra, led by instructor Grace Lai, and the Voices of Silicon Valley ensemble, led by Deaconoff. The performance will take place Saturday, March 29, from 5-7 p.m.

What To Do If ICE Agents Are On Campus

Posters have been placed around the college to help ensure that students and employees know what to do in the unlikely event that immigration agents come to campus.

You can now download an 8.5x11” poster or a sheet of wallet cards to print at home on the Resources for Undocumented Students webpage.

The posters are a project of the Academic Senate, building on earlier efforts by HEFAS (Higher Education for AB 540 Students), in collaboration with the Office of Communications and President’s Office.
